Why are these release boxes important to wildlife? Animals attracted to cavities such as squirrels, Virginia opossums and a variety of passerines are provided with a release box to help simulate a more natural environment during their recovery process. Over time, a release box becomes a place to establish a cache of food to eat throughout the year or even provides shelter from predators, weather or simply a place to rest – just like natural cavities in the wild. For many juvenile animals this is their first home when released back into the wild!
